Threads of Legacy 2024
The Threads of Legacy exhibition (2024) commemorates the artists of my maternal Portuguese lineage.
As a recipient of this matriarchal creative legacy, my work includes painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and sculpture.
My work evokes an aesthetically sensitive response. In an introspective search for my identity, I endeavour to speak through my art. My academic pursuits have provided impetus for personal growth and creative exploration, keeping my maternal legacy alive in today’s world.
My exhibition explores the concept of a tenuous intergenerational transfer. The bowls rest on plinths and move up the wall in one continuous movement. I explore the fragility of life through tissue paper bowls, attached to a wall surface stencilled with a crochet pattern. This creates the impression that the bowls will fly away at any moment. Some bowls are damaged, alluding to the effects of trauma.
Jung’s notion of a collective unconscious determines that certain archetypes and creative instincts are shared intergenerationally. A mother’s artistic talent may tap into this shared reservoir, influencing her children’s creativity through inherited psychological archetypes (Cherry 2024).
The collage is an homage to my maternal lineage. It includes a family photograph, embroidery and crochet in an autobiographical journey highlighting the importance of women in art. My exhibition includes wooden bowls, clay, paintings, collage, and paper.
